10 things to check before you buy a used Bertram 31

The Bertram 31 is one of the great production hulls, but every one is now forty to sixty-five years old, and it ages in specific, expensive ways that rarely show from the dock. Work this list worst-first before you write a check.

Moisture-map and sound the balsa core everywhere

The deck, cabin top, cockpit sole, and both hull sides are balsa-cored, and a delaminated or fully rotted core can read falsely dry on a meter, so take comparative readings, tap for the dead thud, and core-sample where anything is suspicious.

Probe the stringers and fuel-tank bays for mushy plywood

The molded glass stringers wick water through unsealed limber holes and drains and rot worst around the engine mounts and tank bays, and a bulging stringer that still taps solid means the glass is holding while the core underneath has failed.

Establish the age and material of the boxed-in belly fuel tank

The centerline tank is glassed in so low in the bilge that its corroding bottom cannot be inspected, so treat any unknown-age tank as a near-term expense, and count on replacing an original fiberglass tank on a gas boat because ethanol attacks the resin.

Treat the windshield and flybridge as core-rot pumps

The aluminum windshield frames and flybridge are documented chronic leakers whose gaskets flatten every four or five years, feeding water straight into the balsa cabin top, deck, and hull sides.

Check every piece of deck hardware and the core around it

Cleats, rails, and stanchions are through-bolted into cored deck, so any loose or weeping fitting is both a leak and a soft spot, and the two problems are one story.

Verify gas ventilation, blower, ducts, and flame arrestor Safety

On a gas or gas-repowered boat, gasoline vapor settles in the deep bilge where the tanks and engines live, so the blower and ducts, a Coast Guard flame arrestor, and a retrofit carbon monoxide detector are life-safety checks, not options.

Inspect the exhaust manifolds and risers

Wet-exhaust manifolds and risers are age-limited and, on gas engines, rust through internally and flood a cylinder with raw water, so budget replacement every five to seven seasons in salt.

Check shaft, strut, and rudder alignment on the deep exposed gear

The deep-V drops the running gear well below the keel where it is long and heavily loaded, and owners report a strut offset of even about 1.5 inches versus the opposite side produces handling problems.

Sound the transom for wet core and cracks

Most 31 transoms are solid glass, but a sixty-year-old transom should still be checked for crazing at the shaft and strut exits and around any added trim-tab, transducer, or outboard penetration.

Confirm the repower status and price accordingly

A fresh diesel repower runs well over $100,000 once engines, beds, shafts, and alignment are done, so the forum wisdom holds: buy the most finished, already-repowered 31 you can afford rather than a cheap project hull.
