10 things to check before you buy a used Catalina 30

The Catalina 30 is a stiff, forgiving coastal cruiser, but a shiny topcoat hides the slow, structural defects that actually cost money. Four areas carry real weight: the compression post, the keel bolts and smile, wet deck core at the chainplates, and an aging rudder.

Probe the under-mast compression block in the bilge for softness Safety

Pre-1988 boats bear the mast load on a white-oak block glassed into the low point of the bilge, and if it soaks and rots the post subsides and the whole rig settles with it.

Open and close the head and V-berth doors and sight the cabin sole

As the compression post drops the hull geometry changes and joinery racks out of square, so binding doors or frames a prior owner already trimmed point straight at a settled post.

Inspect all eight 3/4-inch keel bolt heads and note the material Safety

Pre-1987 hulls used mild-steel bolts that rust while the Mark II switched to stainless, so read the actual bolt heads in the bilge rather than trusting the paperwork.

Measure the smile at the hull-keel joint, worst at the forward edge

A hairline is typical of a narrow external ballast keel and normal, but a widening, rust-stained, weeping smile can mean dropping the keel, quoted around $5,000.

Inspect the chainplates where they land on the plywood bulkheads Safety

Trapped salt water causes crevice corrosion invisible from above and below, older boats have documented lower-chainplate failures, so pull the plates if there is any leak history.

Moisture-meter and tap the sidedecks around every stanchion and fitting

Catalina used washers instead of proper backing plates, so the balsa and plywood core wets out and crushes, with delamination documented in the sidedeck between the shroud chainplates.

Moisture-meter and sound the rudder, and check for side-to-side play Safety

Early foam-core blades waterlog and rust the internal steel armature until the blade can turn independently of the stock; up-down play is normal but side play is not.

Inspect the fuel tank top, supports, and pickup Safety

The factory rested tanks on hull or wooden brackets that trap moisture, and owners report roughly a ten-year life before pinhole leaks appear.

Sniff-test the holding system and check how the tank is vented Safety

Catalina uniquely vented waste tanks into the stanchions, and a disconnected stanchion vent hose is the common leak, so treat it as an upgrade candidate.

Inspect the spreaders, rigging age, and swage terminals Safety

Wooden spreaders can fail and there are documented dismastings on aged rigs, and the class guidance is to replace standing rigging at about ten years in salt water.
