10 things to check before you buy a used Grand Banks 36 Classic

The Grand Banks 36 earns its quality reputation, but almost every problem on a 30-to-60-year-old boat traces back to the 'big four': fuel tanks, electrical, deck leaks, and window leaks. Work these model-specific checks before you buy, and confirm whether the hull is wood or fiberglass on paper first, because it decides who should survey the boat.

Sound the teak decks and check the overhead for brown ooze

The plywood-cored subdeck rots as thousands of screw penetrations and dried-out bungs let water in, and stripping and reglassing a 36 runs $20,000 to $30,000 or more.

Inspect the steel fuel tank tops and outboard faces for rust Safety

The original black-iron tanks rust from the outside as deck and fuel-fill leaks pool water on top near the fill pipe, and a full two-tank replacement is $20,000 to $35,000 over 6 to 10 weeks.

Ask 'is this boat 32-volt?' before anything else Safety

Many older Grand Banks were factory-wired 32V, now an orphan system that is hard and costly to source parts for, and converting to 12V roughly triples the current so all the wire has to be resized.

Inspect the Ford Lehman exhaust mixing elbow by removal Safety

The riser corrodes internally with no outside sign and can cook the exhaust hose or push raw water back toward the engine, so it must come off for inspection, not just get a flashlight.

The plywood in the flybridge steps is a documented Grand Banks weak point that saturates and rots, so check for softness underfoot.

Operate every seacock and inspect the steering gear Safety

Seized or handle-less seacocks and corroded chain-and-sprocket steering are common findings, and a published GB36 survey found one seacock that would not move and another with no handle.

Sound and moisture-meter the bottom for blisters (glass boats)

The 1973-and-later glass hulls can develop osmotic blisters, checked below the waterline at haulout while the hull is still wet, with a full peel-and-barrier job reaching five figures.
