The Bimota KB1 was the bike that turned a small Rimini chassis workshop into a household name among serious riders. Built from 1978, it paired Bimota's own hand-welded tubular frame with a proven Kawasaki inline-four (the "K" in KB stands for Kawasaki, "B" for Bimota), most commonly the 1015 cc Z1000 unit and, in early cars, the 903 cc Z1 engine. The idea was simple and radical for its day: take a strong but softly framed Japanese superbike engine and wrap it in a rigid, light, precisely engineered Italian chassis.
Designed by Massimo Tamburini, who later penned the Ducati 916 and the MV Agusta F4, the KB1 was reportedly his own favorite. He chased weight and handling rather than headline horsepower, and the result was a rare, expensive, jewel-like machine. Only 827 were ever built, and all but 16 left the factory as kits for the owner to assemble, which makes a genuine, correctly built example a true collector's motorcycle today.
