About This Book

This is a working owner's reference for a boat that never had one, an obscure 1970s Taiwan-built trawler that left almost no factory paper behind. What follows is honest about the difference between what is truly known about the C&L 37 and what is simply known about boats like it, and it is built to be used with a flashlight in one hand.

1.1 What this book is

This is the reference book for the C&L 37 sedan/Europa trawler: a 37-foot fiberglass powerboat built by C&L Marine Corp. of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and sold in North America under a confusing handful of badges (C&L, Sea Ranger, Puget Trawler) during roughly the late 1970s and 1980s. If you own one, are shopping for one, or have just closed on one and are standing in the saloon wondering where the fuel tanks are, this book is written for you.

It is not a factory manual, because no factory manual survives, more on that in a moment. It is instead a distillation of what can be verified today from period sources, surviving brokerage records, the engine and gear makers who are still in business, and the owners who keep these boats running and talk about it in public. Where those sources are solid, this book says so plainly. Where they are thin, it says that too, rather than dressing a guess up as a specification.

1.2 The boat, in one honest paragraph

The C&L 37 is a good, plain, semi-displacement cruising trawler of a type that came out of Taiwan "by the score" in the 1970s and '80s (source: pacificyachting.com), flooding a market hungry for affordable cruising boats. It has a hand-laid solid GRP hull with a full-length keel, a Europa-style sedan house with covered walkaround side decks and a flybridge, close to 6'6" of headroom, and, most often, a single naturally-aspirated Ford Lehman 120 diesel behind a Borg Warner Velvet Drive gearbox, though verified twin-Lehman examples exist and the variant you own changes several chapters of this book. It is a comfortable, unglamorous, thrifty boat that chugs along near hull speed and asks little of its diesel. It is also, in 2026, a 48-year-old wooden-cored, teak-decked, iron-tanked boat from the era before Taiwan yards tightened quality control around 1981 (source: pacificyachting.com), which means condition, not badge, is very nearly the whole of its value. Loved and maintained, it is one of the best-value ways onto the water in its size; neglected, it is a list of five-figure repairs wearing a pretty teak coat.

1.3 A frank note on evidence

You should know, before you trust a single number in this book, how little hard documentation exists.

C&L Marine was a small, mid-size, poorly-documented yard. Its best primary trace is a single period quote from its president, Li Kai-yuan, in a Taiwan government magazine (source: taiwan-panorama.com), that one citation is genuinely the strongest evidence of the company's leadership that this entire project could find. There is no surviving hull registry, no parts catalog, no build drawings, no brochure confirmed in any collection, and no successor holding the molds. The company is simply gone. As a result, much of what is reliably known about your boat is not C&L-specific at all: it is shared knowledge about 1970s Taiwan trawlers as a class (CHB, Marine Trader, and the rest), which applies to the C&L 37 by construction similarity rather than by direct documentation.

This book refuses to blur that line. Throughout, factual claims about the boat carry one of two labels:

  • [C&L-SPECIFIC]: evidence about C&L Marine boats specifically (a documented hull, a period listing, an owner's account of this model).
  • [TAIWAN-GENERAL]: evidence about the era's Taiwan-built trawlers as a class, applied here by similarity.

These labels are never interchangeable, and keeping them apart is the single most important honesty in the book. It is better that you know a fact is borrowed from a sister ship than that you mistake it for a factory spec.

1.4 How this book handles conflict and lore

The record on this boat is full of contradictions and community folklore, and this book treats them as first-class information rather than sweeping them under the rug:

  • [CONFLICT] marks the places where good sources genuinely disagree, the boat's fuel capacity, the exact span of the Sea Ranger production years, whether one ambiguous listing means a tri-cabin variant exists. When sources conflict, this book presents both and tells you which measurement on your own boat would settle it.
  • [UNVERIFIED] marks a claim that is plausible but rests on thin or single-source footing, a forum snippet, an aggregator profile, a broker's boilerplate. You are told to treat these as leads, not gospel.

A worked example of why this matters: popular AI-generated and aggregator "builder profiles" for C&L confidently name a second principal and a famous designer that independent checking shows belong to entirely unrelated companies that merely share the initials "C&L." This book prints only what survived that scrutiny, the president, Li Kai-yuan, and uses the mix-up as a standing warning: for an orphan boat, a confident-sounding profile is often just noise dressed as history. Community lore from TrawlerForum and the cousin owners' groups is cited generously, because it is where the real knowledge of these boats lives, but it is always labeled as what it is.

1.5 How the chapters are organized

The book runs from history, through the engine and systems, into the boat's known failure points, its upkeep, and finally the parts and community that keep it alive:

  • History & identity: the yard, the name tangle (C&L / Sea Ranger / Puget Trawler / Europa), and what can honestly be tabulated as specifications.
  • Engine & propulsion: the Ford Lehman 120 in depth, the Perkins alternative, the drivetrain, and sea-trial numbers.
  • Systems: DC and AC electrical, fuel, fresh water, the head, bilge pumps, and the dual-station hydraulic steering.
  • Known issues: the classic Taiwan-trawler failure catalog: wet deck cores, black-iron fuel tanks, exhaust risers, leaking teak windows, and aged wiring.
  • Maintenance: the service calendar and the interval discipline this particular boat rewards.
  • Parts & community: where every part actually comes from, and where the owners are.

Where to start:

  • If you are shopping, read Known Issues first, then History & identity, go in knowing that on a boat this age, condition is roughly 100% of value, and budget a reserve on top of the purchase price for the era's usual list.

1.6 Verify it on your boat

Because the factory record is so thin, this book will repeatedly send you back to the boat itself with a tape measure and a flashlight. Take that seriously, it is the ethic of the whole project:

  • The HIN names the importer, not the builder. The U.S. Coast Guard never issues a MIC to a foreign yard; the American importer holds it and affixes the HIN (source: newboatbuilders.com). That is exactly why one hull wears "Sea Ranger" and its sister wears "Puget Trawler." Record your HIN and look up the MIC, it names your boat's importer, a genuinely useful genealogy datum, but it will not tell you it was built by C&L.
  • Read the engine plate. Do not assume a Ford Lehman 120 because the type usually has one. The plate, commonly on the valve cover or the block side, is the only proof of your engine's model and serial; a single confusing listing in this book's research even suggested a related "2704E" designation, which only a plate reading can resolve.
  • Measure the boat yourself. Published figures for draft, displacement, and tankage effectively do not exist for the C&L 37, and the beam and fuel numbers that do exist trace to single listings. Where this book gives a spec, it grades the source. Where it cannot, it tells you to weigh the boat at the travel-lift and measure the tanks yourself, and invites you to treat your own boat as the missing spec sheet. In a real sense, the most authoritative document about your C&L 37 is the one you write as you go.
Chapter 2

History & Identity

Your C&L 37 was built by a Kaohsiung, Taiwan yard that no longer exists, sold under a fistful of interchangeable names, and never documented itself in any way you can now look up. That sounds like a problem, and in a few small ways it is, but the story underneath is a good one, because your obscure boat comes from a well-understood era, a respected yard, and a family tree with at least one famous branch.

2.1 The Taiwan trawler boom

To understand a C&L 37 you first have to understand the wave it rode in on. In the 1960s Taiwan's boatbuilders were mostly making wooden craft for American servicemen; the fiberglass technique arrived in 1965, introduced by the Ta Chiao Bros. yard. What followed was an explosion. By the end of 1980 the island had grown from five yacht builders to eighty-three, exporting more than US$60 million of boats a year, and since 1977 Taiwan had overtaken Canada as the largest supplier of boats to the United States. (These are period figures, published by the Taiwan government magazine Taiwan Panorama in a feature that, as you'll see, matters directly to your boat.)

What these yards sold into was a hungry American market looking for cheap cruising boats, and the product they became famous for was the trawlertrawler, a marketing word more than a technical one. A true fishing trawler drags nets; these were full-displacement or semi-displacementsemi-displacement pleasure cruisers styled to look rugged and workmanlike, with a single economical diesel, a tall deckhouse, and a fuel-sipping hull that plodded along at seven knots and could, in principle, cross oceans. The formula was irresistible: a boat that looked like a proper little ship, cost a fraction of a European motoryacht, and burned about a liter of diesel per mile.

The archetype, the C&L 37's most famous cousin, came out of a single import gamble. In the mid-1970s New Jersey entrepreneur Don Miller of Marine Trading International began importing a 34-foot aft-cabin model from Taiwan; over the following decade he is estimated to have brought in more than 3,000 Marine Traders. Around that flood grew a whole genus of near-identical Taiwan trawlers, CHB (Chung Hwa Boat Building), Albin, DeFever imports, Hershine, Universal, many of them hulls popped from similar molds, finished by small family shops, then badged with whatever name the importer preferred.

Two facts from this era stick to your boat permanently. First, quality was inconsistent and boat-by-boat: the same model might have intricately carved dragons on every interior door and poorly fitted wall panels behind them. The industry made significant quality-control improvements after about 1981, which places a 1978 C&L 37 squarely on the pre-reform side of that line. Second, and more happily, the hulls of the period were generally over-built and over-resined, so blistering and osmosis tend to be less common than on contemporaries. [CONFLICT] Note that this class-level optimism does not always hold for your specific model: a recent purchase survey of a C&L 37 reported "more and larger bottom blisters than expected" (TrawlerForum thread 77301). Both things are true, the class tendency is good, the sample of one was bad, so blister inspection stays firmly on your haul-out list.

2.2 C&L Marine Corp., what's solid, what's murky

Here is the settled core, and it is smaller than you might wish. Your boat was built by C&L Marine Corp. (also written "C & L Marine"), a fiberglass production and semi-custom yacht builder in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, active from roughly the mid-to-late 1970s through the 1980s, building both trawler-style powerboats and cruising sailboats for export. Its president was Li Kai-yuan.

That last fact deserves emphasis because it rests on the single best source in the entire record: not a brokerage listing or a forum post, but a named, period, government-published citation. In Taiwan Panorama's "Master Yacht-Builder" feature, Li Kai-yuan is quoted by name and title, "Li Kai-yuan, president of the C & L Marine Corp., explained that yacht building in advanced countries is usually done as a sideline, but in Taiwan manufacturers are specialized." The significance is twofold: it confirms the company and its leader beyond any doubt, and it shows C&L was prominent enough to be asked to speak for the whole industry to a government magazine. This was not a fly-by-night operation.

Almost everything else about the corporation is murky. What "C" and "L" stood for is unknown: [UNVERIFIED] one summarized forum thread claimed "the L in C&L refers to Alan Alexander," which is internally incoherent (an "L" standing for a name with no L in it) and almost certainly garbled; treat the initials' meaning as lost, and don't trust any expansion you see printed elsewhere. The founding date, the dissolution date, the size of the workforce, the fate of the molds and drawings, none of it has survived in any source reachable today. A Chinese-language records search might yet turn something up; nobody in the English-speaking owner community has managed it.

The Ocean Alexander connection. There is one genuinely notable thread in C&L's history, and it is worth knowing because it reframes the yard entirely. Alexander Chu, the founder of Ocean Alexander, worked at C&L first. The source is a print retrospective, Rick Hudson's "Taiwan Trawlers" in Pacific Yachting, which states it plainly: "Alexander Chu, who had worked at C&L, went on to start Ocean Alexander with a 50-foot pilothouse model that could be bought for $125,000." A TrawlerForum thread independently ties the two builders' output together and links the naval architect Ed Monk (Sr. and Jr.) to boats from both. Rate this MEDIUM confidence: one strong print source plus one forum echo, but it is a legitimate "your humble trawler shares DNA with a luxury-yacht dynasty" story, and it is true as far as the record can tell.

The reputation for heavy layup. C&L's boats, especially the Sea Ranger line, carry a consistent reputation for rugged, affordable, heavy construction. The hulls are solid, hand-laid fiberglass, and owners who have opened them up report real structural fabric in the mix: "a bunch of rovingroving in the layup, not just mass chopper-gun mat" (TrawlerForum threads 32835/35507). Brokerage copy for larger Sea Rangers describes hulls "a solid 1 inch thick." [UNVERIFIED] Treat that specific one-inch figure as folklore until your own survey sounding confirms a thickness, it did not resurface in a citable form during research, but the character it points to (thick, over-built, repairable-anywhere solid glass) is well attested and is one of the best things about the boat.

What C&L else built. The yard was more than a one-trawler shop, which is itself evidence of a substantial operation. On the sail side it built the Explorer 45 (a Stan Huntingford ketch/cutter, roughly 35 hulls, 1977–1982) and the Sea Eagle 31 (also Huntingford, 1979–1982, only about 10 imported to the US). On the power side it built the 37, larger Sea Rangers, a "C&L 46 Trawler," and a Comfort motorsailer badge. Those two documented sailboat production runs, 35 and 10 hulls, are the only hard production-count anchors that exist for this builder, and they suggest a yard working in modest, dozens-per-model volumes rather than hundreds. Hold that thought; it becomes the best available guess for your own model's rarity.

2.3 The naming tangle

This is the section that earns its keep, because as a C&L 37 owner you will meet at least six confusable names, and you need to know which ones are your boat, which are cousins, and which are complete strangers.

Start with the mechanism that explains most of the confusion, a piece of U.S. regulation. The Coast Guard will not assign a MICManufacturer Identification Code (MIC) to a foreign builder. The U.S. importer holds the MIC and affixes the HINHull Identification Number (HIN) to the transom. So the paper trail on a Taiwan-built boat records whoever imported it, not who built it, which is exactly how one C&L hull could leave the same shed and reach America wearing a different name than its sister. This regulation (HIGH confidence, it is general U.S. law) is the skeleton key to the whole tangle.

Names your boat really wore:

  • C&L / C & L: the yard's own name. Boats appear in brokerage databases under make "C & L."
  • Sea Ranger: C&L's flagship trawler brand, and the name you'll most often see applied to the 37 by brokers. The same 37-foot hull has been sold both as a "C & L Sea Ranger 37 Trawler" (San Diego, Cabrillo Yacht Sales) and, by owners, as simply a "C&L 37."
  • Puget Trawler: not a yard but a Pacific-Northwest importer/dealer badge. A 1978 hull was sold as a "C&L Puget Trawler 37 Sedan." [CONFLICT] The catch: the Puget Trawler badge was also applied to CHB-built boats. The resolution is not that a source is wrong, it's that "Puget Trawler" was an importer's brand stuck on boats from more than one yard. A hull that carries both "C&L" and "Puget Trawler" in its own listing title (as one 1978 boat does) shows the overlap is real, not sloppy record-keeping.
  • Europa: not a brand at all but a style term (see the next section). "C&L 37 Europa" describes a configuration, not a builder.
  • Comfort: a second C&L power/motorsailer badge, thinly but independently attested.

The era context, in the words of the Pacific Yachting retrospective, is that these boats "were sold under a bewildering number of names, Albin, CHB, Cheer Men, C & L, DeFever, Hershine, La Paz, Marine Trader, North Sea, Puget Trawler and Universal." Note that C & L makes that canonical list on its own.

False friends, names that are NOT your boat. Four unrelated things share initials or model names with your trawler, and every one of them will pollute your web searches:

  1. C&L Boatworks / CL Sailboats of Canada. Founded by Henry Croce and Ken Lofthouse (the "C" and the "L") in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, former Wayfarer dinghy importers who tooled the fiberglass CL 16 sailing dinghy in 1968. Sailing dinghies, Canada, still an active class. Zero connection to Kaohsiung. This is the single biggest source of search noise for "C&L boat."
  2. C&L Boatworks (2000s sportfish). A completely separate American company founded in 2000, building custom Carolina-style sportfish boats. Distinct in every way. A warning is embedded here: you will find AI-generated and aggregator "builder profiles" online that mash this company's people into your boat's history, one such profile names "Jim Luxton" as a C&L Marine principal. He was not. Jim Luxton co-founded Jarrett Bay Boatworks in North Carolina in 1986 and later ran the unrelated 2000s "C&L Boatworks"; the aggregator simply collided two companies that share initials. Do not carry his name into the Taiwan story, this book prints Li Kai-yuan as the only documented principal, and treats the Luxton mix-up as a cautionary tale about trusting machine-generated histories of orphan boats.
  3. Thompson "Sea Ranger." A U.S. runabout model name from 1978–79 (Thompson Boat Co.), nothing to do with the Taiwan Sea Ranger brand.
  4. The community's own confusion. The oldest TrawlerForum builder-ID thread is literally titled "C & L Boatworks?? marine??" (thread 22793). The uncertainty about who built these boats is decades old and communal, you are not the first owner to go looking.

The Sea Ranger → King Yachts lineage

C&L's Sea Ranger line outlived C&L itself. In the late 1980s the Sea Ranger name and production passed to King Yachts (also Taiwan), and production ended around 1991. After that, nothing, no successor holds the molds, drawings, or records, and King Yachts itself appears to be long gone. Rate this MEDIUM confidence: it is consistent across three tertiary sources (nautipedia, listingsport, and a TrawlerForum model-history thread) but rests on none that are primary.

The exact dates and dimensions of the line disagree source to source, and you should see the disagreement honestly rather than a false-precise summary:

A reconcilable reading: U.S. imports ran roughly 1979–1988, King-era production limped on to 1991, and the size claims are approximate recollections that shouldn't be quoted as fact. One wrinkle matters for your specific boat: the documented 1978 C&L 37s (including the one this book is built around) predate the "official" Sea Ranger import window of 1979. [UNVERIFIED] Either brokers retro-applied the Sea Ranger badge to earlier boats, or the line simply began before its recorded import date. The honest phrasing is that badge usage on 1978 boats is inconsistent, which is worth remembering when you see your own hull described three different ways in three different listings.

2.4 The 37 in the range: sedan and Europa

The C&L 37 is a sedan / Europa trawlertrawler. Those two words describe the same boat from two angles. "Sedan" is the American term for the single-level deckhouse-and-saloon layout; "Europa" is the European-canal-boat styling cue, an extended boat-deck overhang aft and covered walkaround side decks that let you get from cockpit to foredeck without leaving shelter. The best period description survives in a brokerage archive and is worth quoting:

"Europa style trawler known for its rugged construction and great looks. The interior space is one of the largest on the market with close to 6'6" headroom … classic sedan trawler lines with covered walk-around decks and the appearance of a much larger vessel."

Two configurations of the 37 are verifiably documented in real hulls, and the distinction matters for almost every practical chapter that follows (fuel burn, tankage, docking):

  • Single-engine: e.g., the 1978 "C&L Puget Trawler 37 Sedan," a single Ford Lehman 120-class diesel, GRP hull, two-station hydraulic steering.
  • Twin-engine: e.g., a 1978 C&L 37 with twin Lehman 120s (TrawlerForum thread 41782).

Both single- and twin-Lehman 1978 C&L 37s exist; neither is "the" correct configuration, and you must confirm which you have. There is also [CONFLICT] one ambiguous listing describing a "tri-cabin configuration" on a 1978 37 whose own spec block simultaneously says "Cabins: 2." A true tri-cabin (with a separate aft cabin) would contradict the sedan form that every other documented 37 shares; the likeliest explanation is that the listing counted the V-berth, a convertible saloon, and flybridge sleeping. Do not assume a tri-cabin variant exists on the strength of one self-contradicting advertisement.

2.5 Production years and volume: an honest blank

Here the record simply runs out, and the book will not pretend otherwise. Boats badged 1978 and 1979 are documented under the "37" designation; nothing earlier or later surfaced, and the King-era boats jump to 38- and 39-foot models. As for how many were built, nobody knows. No hull registry, no factory brochure, no HIN series, no production ledger has ever been found for any C&L powerboat model.

The only honest way to estimate is by analogy to the two sailboat runs that are documented (35 Explorer 45s, 10 Sea Eagle 31s), which points to modest volumes, likely dozens, not hundreds: of C&L 37s. Treat that as an educated inference, not a fact. If you ever find a genuine production figure, you will have found something the entire owner community has been unable to.

This blank is worth reframing rather than lamenting. The absence of factory paper is normal for the whole Taiwan-trawler class, and it changes almost nothing about owning the boat: nearly nothing on a 1978 C&L 37 is model-specific. The hull is generic solid glass; the engine is a marinized Ford industrial diesel with a thriving aftermarket; the gearbox is a commodity Borg Warner Velvet Drive; the deck hardware is era bronze; the tanks and windows were semi-custom even when new. The one truly "C&L" thing, the molded fiberglass structure, is the one thing that never needed a factory to support it.

2.6 Why these boats have the reputation they do

Ask around the trawler world and a C&L 37 draws a consistent picture, good and bad, and it is worth setting down plainly.

The good. Genuine value, you get a lot of capable, salty-looking cruising boat for the money, with no brand premium to pay. A heavy, over-built, roving-reinforced solid-glass hull that is strong and endlessly repairable. A surprisingly spacious, teak-lined interior with near-6'6" headroom in a 37-foot boat. A famously durable, unstressed diesel that can run for many thousands of hours on simple care.

The bad, and it is the same list for every unrestored boat of the type. Screwed-down teak decks over a plywood core that becomes the single most expensive thing on the boat when it goes wet; original black-iron fuel tanks that rust from the top down; teak-framed windows that leak; exhaust risers that quietly kill engines; gate valves where proper seacocks belong; and decades of owner-added wiring layered onto inconsistent 1970s original work. None of this is unique to C&L, it is the standard Taiwan-trawler failure catalog, covered system by system in the chapters that follow. The through-line: these boats reward modernizing and punish neglect, because the cheap items (a $200 riser, a cleared window drain) protect the catastrophic ones (a hydrolocked engine, a $10,000–$40,000 deck).

That combination, high intrinsic value, heavy honest construction, and a long list of age-driven jobs, is exactly why the boats trade the way they do: condition is very nearly 100% of value on a 48-year-old Taiwan trawler, and an obscure badge like C&L carries neither a premium nor a discount against a Marine Trader or CHB of the same length and state.

2.7 An honest identity portrait

So: what do you actually own? A C&L 37 is a well-built, orphaned, 1970s Taiwan sedan/Europa trawler from a real and reasonably respected Kaohsiung yard, the same yard that a founder of Ocean Alexander cut his teeth in, sold under a scatter of importer badges that make it hard to look up and easy to mistake for four unrelated boats. Its factory record has largely evaporated, its production numbers are unknown and probably always will be, and even the meaning of its name is lost. What survives is the boat itself: heavy glass, a durable diesel, a teak-clad interior, and a design good enough that people were still building versions of it into the 1990s.

That is not a boat with a pedigree you can frame on the bulkhead. It is a boat with a character you can trust once you've verified it with your own hands, which is the whole reason this book exists.

2.8 How to tell what you actually have

Because the badges lie and the paperwork is thin, confirm your boat's identity from the boat, in this order:

  1. The HINHIN (Hull Identification Number). Look on the upper starboard corner of the transom (and often a hidden duplicate inside the boat). Record it exactly. The first three characters are the MICMIC: the Manufacturer Identification Code.
  2. Look the MIC up. Because the Coast Guard issues MICs to importers, not to foreign yards, your MIC will most likely name the U.S. importer: which is genuinely useful genealogy: it tells you whether your hull came in as a "Sea Ranger," a "Puget Trawler," or something else, and it explains the name on your papers. [UNVERIFIED] No C&L-specific MIC surfaced in research, so you are looking up your hull's code, not a known C&L code.

Heat-Exchanger Coil
A coiled tube inside a tank or heater through which one fluid passes to warm another; for example, the engine-coolant coil inside a water heater.
Helm
The steering station of the boat, including the wheel and controls.
Helm Pump
The hydraulic pump built into the steering wheel that pushes fluid to the steering ram when the wheel is turned, in a hydraulic steering system.
High-Water Alarm
An alarm triggered by a float or sensor set above the normal bilge level, warning the crew that water is rising faster than the pumps can handle.
Hin

Scupper
A drain opening that lets water run off a deck or out of a cockpit, directing it overboard or down a hose through the hull.
Seacock
A shutoff valve mounted on a through-hull fitting at or below the waterline, used to open or close a seawater connection; the last defense against flooding through that fitting.
Sedan
A trawler layout with a single main-deck cabin and saloon flowing directly to an aft cockpit, without a raised aft cabin.
Semi-Displacement

Sheave

Sight Gauge
