Classic car VIN decoder
Decodes against the US government's own vPIC database, then runs the check-digit maths that catches a transposed character or an invented VIN.
Pre-1981 VINs are not standardised. Every builder used its own scheme, and the character count varies from 5 to 13. A 1967 Mustang VIN and a 1967 Beetle VIN have nothing structurally in common, so no general decoder can read them. For those, the marque registry or the model's own reference is the only reliable source, which is what our volumes are for.
A VIN decode is not a history report. It tells you what the factory built. It does not tell you what happened to the car afterwards, which is the part that costs money.
Reading a 17-character VIN by eye
| Position | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | World Manufacturer Identifier: country, builder, and vehicle type. |
| 4–8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body, engine, restraint system. Builder-specific coding. |
| 9 | Check digit, calculated from the other sixteen. This is the one that catches a fake. |
| 10 | Model year. |
| 11 | Assembly plant. |
| 12–17 | Sequential serial number. |
The pre-purchase inspection kit for your vehicle
The VIN says what left the factory. The kit is the other half: where this model rusts, what the paint gauge should read, and the numbers that mean walk away.
