Irwin fastened the deck to the hull flange with sheet-metal screws through the aluminum toe rail rather than through-bolting it, and those screws lose grip as the joint works, so run a flashlight along the entire interior sheer clamp looking for stains, weeps, and salt trails.
The deck is balsa-cored and the hardware over it is screwed rather than through-bolted, so leaks feed the core; sound the whole deck with a hammer and moisture-meter every stanchion base, cleat, chainplate slot, and the mast step (two of three boats Practical Sailor inspected showed water inside).
Practical Sailor found bow and stern pulpits only screwed down, and one boat had cleats held by sheet-metal screws, which is unsafe load-bearing gear and the main feeder for core damage, so lean hard outboard on every stanchion and check below for nuts and backing plates.

- Is this a substitute for a surveyor?
- No, and it does not try to be. A professional survey is what your insurer and your lender will require, and you should buy one. This kit is for the trip before that: deciding which boat is worth paying a surveyor to look at, and walking aboard able to see what is actually in front of you.
